Wednesday pipe bombs were addressed to the home of Barack Obama in Washington, DC and Hillary Clinton in Westchester County NY. The crudely built bombs were sent to other prominent democrats and led to speculation whether opponents of the right were being targeted:
Pipe bombs were sent to several prominent Democrats, including former President Barack Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, setting off an intense investigation on Wednesday into whether a bomber is going after political figures vilified by the right wing.
CNN received a similar bomb, addressed to John O. Brennan, a career intelligence officer who served as Mr. Obama’s C.I.A. director. The discovery of the device caused a mass evacuation of the Time Warner Center in Midtown Manhattan, where the network is located.
None of the devices harmed anyone; it was not immediately clear whether any of them could have exploded. One law enforcement official said investigators were examining the possibility that they were hoax devices.
The F.B.I. said in a statement that the devices were similar to one found Monday at the home of George Soros, the billionaire philanthropist and liberal donor. Investigators were seeking to determine whether they were sent by the same person or persons.
The Time Warner Center in Manhattan was evacuated after a pipe bong was sent to CNN and intended for John O. Brennan, a critic of President Trump and a former CIA director under Obama. The FBI said the devices were similar to the one found at the home of billionaire George Soros. Congress woman Maxine Waters and former Attorney General Eric Holder were also reported to have had a device shipped to her address.
