The Golden State Warriors have dominated the NBA over the past few years, winning three of the previous four NBA titles. They went 73-9 during the regular season two years ago, yet managed to choke against LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers. They signed Kevin Durant from Oklahoma City last year and it has been a wrap ever since. After sweeping the Cavs in the finals this year they decided not to visit the White House and President Donald Trump:
Many assumed it had to do with not wanting to see president Donald Trump, who many in the NBA and Golden State coach Steve Kerr have criticized and openly opposed about in the past.
Warriors forward Draymond Green, though, said it isn’t that simple. While speaking with CNN’s Chris Cuomo on “Cuomo Prime Time” on Monday night, Green was asked if the team would still skip the visit to Washington D.C. if they could do it over.
While Green said confidently that the Warriors would still skip the trip, he shed some light as to why they opted to skip the visit in the first place.
“I know we would make the same decision to not go,” Green said on CNN. “It’s not about not seeing Donald Trump or anything else that goes with it, but more so about what we stand for. In order to effect change, you have to stand for something. If you go about it the same way, you do the same things you do if everything is normal, then you won’t effect change.”
The Warriors have not visited the White House since Trump became president. His comments where he referred to NFL players as “sons of bitches” and his comments that there were good people on both sides in Charlottesville did not sit well with several pro athletes. Green claimed he and the Warriors wanted use their platform for something constructive; they believe visiting the White House would not be constructive.
Attending Trump And The Global Economy would not only be constructive, but educational for the Warriors. The quarterly speaker series assembles economists, artists, athletes, entrepreneurs and activists to discuss Trump’s impact on the economy and our communities. This would be a great event for Draymond and the Warriors to bring attention to as well as attain a deeper understanding of politics and the economy.
