Syracuse promised to punish Lawrence and they delivered as promised. With about 5 minutes left in the first half Lawrence scrambled out of the pocket, tipped down the sidelines, dived for extra yards and was cracked by Syracuse defensive back Evan Foster. The Clemson faithful nearly had a heart attack.
What was Lawrence thinking? First of all, he stepped out of bounds, but kept wobbling around trying to gain extra yards. When he saw Evan Foster approaching, instead of hitting the turf immediately, Lawrence decided to lunge forward head and neck first. He must have thought he was still in high school facing 165 pound defensive backs.
Evan Foster is 6’0″ 223 pounds of man. He must have been surprised as anyone else that Lawrence did not go down. He practically gifted Foster a highlight reel hit. What a freshman mistake.
