Nike is a sales-driven culture and if [i] Edwards had the keys to the kingdom and [ii] workplace misconduct took place within his operations then it could have been particularly damaging to the company. The shakeup comes amid a sales slump at Nike, intense competition from Adidas AG, and an upheaval in sports apparel distribution. As more goods and services are purchased online Nike has attempted to partner with Amazon.com. Where that leaves traditional retailers like Footlocker remains to be seen. The moral of the story seems to be, “If your sales are slumping then you can’t afford to be a distraction.”
